The first campus event I attended, here at CSUSM, was an
event put on by the Greek life during our schools “rush week.” The event was for the fraternity SAE. The night started at five with a big touch
football game with all of the active members of the fraternity and all of the
rushers. The game was fun and very
competitive. Then around seven the game
ended and everyone began walking down to Flippin Pizza which is in the Ralphs
parking lot off of Twin Oaks. The place
was packed with active SAE active members and rushers. The line just to order was all the way out
the door and curved once it was outside. Once in line you would have to wait at
least thirty minutes just place your order then another fifteen to twenty
minutes just to get pizza and since there were so many guys they were pretty
much out of pizza except for cheese. I
made the most of my time in line and introduced myself to some of the active
members and talked to them about their experiences with the fraternity, the
fraternities philanthropy, how they liked being in it, and how long they have
been doing it for. Everyone I talked to
said that joining a fraternity was the highlight of their college life and that
the friends they made through the process would be their best friends for
life. I also later found out that the restaurant
was giving fifty percent of all of their profits from the night to SAE to give
to a charity of their choice. This
specific event was for the benefit of the children’s hospital. After finally
getting the pizza I sat down with a few of the active members and listened to
all they had to say about the fraternity and the benefits that come along with
it. The most common of which would be
the networking opportunities available to SAE alumni because SAE is one of the
biggest and oldest social fraternities in the country. The whole night was very informative and
impressive and definitely swayed my opinion towards joining a fraternity.
